What is drone mapping / aerial mapping used for?
- Land surveying and cartography: Drone mapping can generate high-resolution orthomosaics and 3D models of areas where low-quality or outdated data is available, providing accurate and detailed information.
- Cadastral surveying: A drone can map an entire area in a fraction of the time it would take with terrestrial equipment, making cadastral surveys faster and more efficient, especially in complex or hard-to-reach environments.
- Volume measurement: By flying a drone over stockpiles and processing the images in photogrammetry software, it is possible to easily extract volumetric measurements of aggregate or wood reserves and track volume changes over time.
- LiDAR Survey: A drone-mounted laser scanner is used to collect data. This scanner is known as a LiDAR sensor and it uses laser pulses that bounce off the ground and surrounding objects and then measures the time it takes for those pulses to return to the sensor. This data is then used to create highly detailed 3D maps of the surveyed areas.
- Animal population counting: Using aerial images and algorithms, drones can count and monitor animal populations on a large scale, providing valuable data for conservation efforts.
- Environmental monitoring: Drones can map major oil spills and help field teams assess and analyze their impact on the environment and manage cleanup efforts.
- Agriculture: By using drones and multispectral cameras, farmers and researchers can detect disease and plant stress from the air, often before it is visible from the ground, allowing for targeted interventions and improved crop yields.
