Benefits of Drone-powered solutions in Agriculture!

Drone-powered solutions in the Agriculture Sector can be seen as the epitome of how technology is transforming traditional industries. Wondering Why do we need drones in Agriculture? We need them desperately as “supply has to meet the ever-growing demand” – as simple as that! We must feed the world’s ever-growing population, which is anticipated to reach 9 billion by 2050, and there will undoubtedly be a 70% increase in food demand during this time. Now the question naturally is, “How can we meet the calorie demands of the 21st century?” As the goal is to maximise production efficiency through evidence-based and data-driven agricultural practices – Drone powered solutions are the way forward! Along with drone-solutions, close collaborations between governments, technology leaders, and the Agriculture sector are also the need of the hour.
Drone-powered Solutions for Agricultural Sector

A PwC report states that drones are projected to provide a $32.4 billion economic value to the farmers. A more detailed, comprehensive understanding of your farm allows you to plan accurately, execute precisely, and respond quickly. Drone-powered solutions can help you with Remote Sensing and Operations of your agricultural initiatives; Planting and Spraying, Surveying and Mapping, Environmental Monitoring and Inspection, to name a few! Precision Agriculture is one of the most significant benefits of drones in agriculture; it is a creative approach to farm management that employs information technology to maintain the health and productivity of crops and land. Precision Agriculture aims at Profitability, Sustainability and Preservation of the environment. Drone-powered solutions are invaluable as they provide information across the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye cannot see. Farmers who have access to this data and the associated Vegetation Index data, such as NDRE and NDVI, can make timely, informed crop treatment decisions, saving money and resources while increasing yields. Insights provided by drones allow farmers to eliminate guesswork, produce more, and reduce the wastage of resources.

We present our drone-powered solutions for Crop Monitoring, Planting and Spraying, Livestock Management, Crop Stress identification, Treatment Planning, Plant Growth, Precision Farming, and much more. Likewise, we also incorporate Drone Data with Machine Learning systems to further escalate the efficiency of our drone-powered solutions!

Case Studies

Let’s look at some inspiring real-life examples of the applications of Drones in the Agricultural sector.

Palm Trees are a symbol of agricultural heritage in the United Arab Emirates. Date palms account for 98% of fruit trees in the UAE; and this country is one of the world’s top 10 producers of dates. Palm trees span more than 13,000 square kilometres over the MENA region. It goes without saying how crucial it is to Keep track of palm trees, as it assists farmers and agronomists in estimating productivity, developing irrigation plans, and allocating resources more efficiently. This used to be primarily a manual process; tree counting was traditionally a time-consuming and labour-intensive operation. Typically, workers would drive and walk around fields, meticulously counting the trees. In addition to being physically demanding, this also leads to low accuracy. Although Satellite imaging is another option, the resolution usually needs to be improved.

Here’s how the FEDS team counted the palm trees in the UAE! You read it right – Drone-powered solutions paired with Artificial Intelligence provided an accurate evaluation of palm tree plantations that brought meaningful impacts in both economic and ecological aspects. Drones covered large areas in extremely short periods of time, and the “counting” – the most time-consuming part – was efficiently carried out by the well-trained AI detector. Counting and quantifying palm trees provided an inventory of the tree plantation translating to well-planned irrigation processes. Likewise, the exact number of trees helped predict the production date. It enabled the farmers and decision-makers with real-time monitoring, improved productivity, and contributed to securing sustainable production and food security.

Here is an even more challenging yet exciting case study of how team FEDS counted the camels, trees, plants and livestock by mapping 1,100 sq km of farmland! Without Drones, it would have taken years to aggregate such massive data for a sustainable agricultural strategy. To save time and preserve data integrity, we had to innovate; we had to build our own Machine Learning (ML) algorithm and put it to use. MoCCaE could accurately analyse farmlands and their status thanks to the high-resolution data provided by FEDS. With this information, they could better direct local farmers and advise them on how many resources they needed and what crops to produce for better results.
